Earlier this spring, I found some Allium vineale (wild garlic) in my lawn and moved it to about a 2x3' area of the fenced garden. They flowered, then the stalks started dying and the seeds were pretty fat, so I pulled it all up. Just had the bulbs with a chicken roast tonight and it was yummy. I'm on the central coast of California (I don't know what growing zone that is, sorry ETA: Zone 10a?) and we are growing them in wine barrels from our local vineyards. They started dying a few days ago and we googled and found out that you harvest them when they die, so we dug up three plants and look we have potatoes!

Last year I tried to grow red onions in my garden - I got a bunch of little starter mini onions, planted them, and they mostly started to grow, until they all died off. I assumed that my soil was not right for them, and decided to try different things this year.

My OH purchased some 'stuff' to use against our onion white rot problem and I'm a little alarmed to see that it's Armillatox. This isn't licenced for sale as a pesticide in Europe. But it's available as an 'outdoor cleaner' and its manufacturer does claim that it's effective against white rot. That claim can be found by following the link 'fungal ( Read more... )

I knew some of our allotment neighbours had white rot but we'd been hoping to avoid it on our Lottie. Today those hopes are dashed. For crying out loud. What a mess it has made of our beautiful onions and our plans for future crops now have to be rethought.
